Traveling with Speargun

Spearboard Community,

I am fairly new to the spearfishing community and I am interested in buying a new speargun, but I have an obstacle limiting the size. Right now I only have a 55cm, because that's the biggest I can fit in my suitcase. I'm looking to get a 110cm mako. It's about $250 just for the gun. If I want to bring it on my first trip, it will cost me more than $200. For that I could almost buy a new gun and just toss it when I leave. What are you guys methods for traveling with a gun? I've looked at shipping there and back, but that still will cost me about $150, which is much more than I am looking to pay.

Thanks, Caleb Northcott

Abellan Albacore 130 Test

Finally got to test the Albacore 130. At first I saw that I had quite a bit of lead in the muzzle and handle compartment. Of course I was going to mod the handle ... but then I figured why not instead of lead balls add weight by having a Carbon Fiber skin. This should have been quite quick and easy but it turned out to be a lot more work than I expected. The Abellan guns are cut by CNC so the tolerances are very tight. Adding CF and epoxy meant that I had to re-cut the trigger hole and redo the track and also redo the muzzle to be able to get everything to fit again. Had I known it would have been so much work I think I would have just done the handle and be done with it. Anyway I like how the gun looks now and it certainly is much more durable.

I didn't like the default Cressi bands the gun came with and switched them out with a nice batch of Primeline 14.6mm small ID. I really can't wait to get this gun hunting dogtooth ... it is just so powerful and shoots flat flat flat. All my test shots with same aim point going 5m, 6m, 7m, 8m ... fit inside a fist. And it does that with quick and easy loading and only 3 bands. Was one of the most fun guns to shoot in the pool and can't wait to get it in the ocean!

Question about Yellowtail

$

Hi everyone,

Im new to the Southern California area, but have been spearfishing for about 5 years now. I'm originally from Seattle (moved down for college) and have only ever done really close quarters hole hunting for bottom fish. My current gun is an OMER Cayman HF Camu in 75cm with a match reel.

If were to throw 2 thick bands and a floatline on my gun would I have any chance at nailing a yellowtail? I'm planning on taking a trip out to Catalina with a buddy sometime in the near future and don't wanna get his or my hopes up if I we have any chance at all against anything other than bottom fish. I have seen videos of people taking yellowtail with what look like shorter guns (<100cm) but I know that a 75 is small even by reef hunting standards, let alone pelagics, so I figured I would come on here and inquire about the feasibility of trying to take a fish like a yellowtail down. I know that, regardless of my guns size, yellowtail is a challenging hunt (and one I am totally unfamiliar with) so don't think I am expecting to jump in and start plugging them either way.

Hopefully I don't look too stupid asking this, I am used to diving in conditions where my guns range exceeds the water visibility 90% of the time, so the whole 'blue water' thing is a bit of a new concept to me

Thanks,

Lino

I have scheduled a spearfishing seminar at Bill Jackson's "Shop For Adventure" in Pinellas Park, Florida. The details are as follows:

Date: Saturday April 22nd 2017
Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Fee: $35.00 for adults & $20.00 for kids 16 and under
Food: Lunch and beverages are included
Raffle: Yes

Phone: 727-576-4169 to register (ask for the dive department)

Address:
Bill Jacksons Shop for Adventure
9501 US Hwy. 19 North
Pinellas Park, Fl 33782

I will be covering all aspects of spearfishing from beginner to advanced. Some of the topics I will cover are: selecting the proper speargun, how to use it, how not to use it, how to take care of it, proper banding, shaft selection, tip options, stalking techniques, body language, proper shot distances, realistic ranges of a speargun, shot selection, optimizing shot angles, freeshafting, lineshafting, line types, advantages and disadvantages of just about everything involving spearfishing. I will be using my Red Snapper model to show proper shot placement and shot angles as well as underwater videos (provided by Capt. Ben Bateman aka Fishkilla) showing proper shooting techniques etc.

This is a large facility so we can easily handle up to 100 shooters. However, it really helps to sign up early so they can plan the food and beverages.

Looking forward to meeting everyone,

Shoot Em' Up,

Kevin

Only been getting out a few times out here in TX and never planning to move back to CA so trying to find these guns a better home. I'm keeping my bluewater gun and am gonna pick up a cheap railgun to dive around the rigs with.

First up - 60" Poseidonsub Voodoo Stick - Enclosed Track

Picked this up a few years back and have killed some awesome fish with it. Unfortunately it doesn't see enough use with me and I could use the money to finance some other stuff right now so I'm looking to find it a new home.

The up close pics are from awhile back but the gun looks pretty much the same right now. It's used so it does have a few scuffs and scratches here and there but the camo epoxy/paint (done by Steve Veros I believe) hide's them really well and the gun is in great shape overall. After I bought this gun I gave it back to Steve and he went through the whole thing, upgraded the trigger, put on a new buttpad, and touched up the ferrules at the muzzle, etc. This model is water ballasted also and handles awesome once you're in the water with it.

As it sits now I'm selling the gun with the following:
1 - Threaded 5/16" shaft (I believe Mori but am not 100% certain)
1 - Spearmaster 5/16" spectra slip tip
1 - 9/32 Flopper Shaft

It is currently rigged with cable which I can leave on or cut off for you. I've also got some 400lb mono I can send with it if you want also.

I think I have a spectra replacement kit from Neptonics somewhere in my gear. If I can find it I will include that too.

Right now the gun is rigged with 3 16mm bands. Neptonics Rubber that I tied myself probably 2 years ago ish. They've only been in the water a couple of times.

And in case anyone needs evidence it works here's a fish from one of my last trips that I took with this gun.

Up next is my my Ulusub 125 Midhandle - Enclosed Track with a 50m Ulusub Reel

This has been a fantastic gun and I've taken a bunch of snapper and even some cobia with it. I never got the chance to take a WSB with it when I lived in CA but it was a dream to swim around the kelp beds with.

I bought this gun new from Jon awhile back. As it sits now it is currently rigged with a 20mm band and a 14mm band, along with an ulusub 50m reel.

This gun is being sold with the following:
1 - 9/32" flopper shaft
1 - 9/32" threaded shaft
1 - 9/32" cable rigged slip tip (neptonics ultimate slip tip)
1 - 50m ulusub reel with neptonics reel line.

All shafts are rigged with neptonics cable which I can leave on there or cut off for you. I have some mono at home I'll ship with this if you want.

I have upgraded the buttpad on this gun as well. When I got it it was a hard plastic that was rounded. I removed that and installed a foam buttpad. I didn't clean up the edges around it too much however it makes this gun 100x better to load now!

Here are some pics of this gun. It's been used 2x since these pics were taken.

There are a few small scuffs on it but overall this gun is also in great shape.

I am in TX but am happy to ship to you.

Both guns before my last trip.

I am asking $750 for the Steve Veros gun and $700 for the ulusub. If you want them both we can definitely make a deal on pricing.

I also have a 6' Crist Polespear with either a 12" or 18" flopper that I am looking to sell for $125. Rigged with a straight band.

Looking for info re: water temps

Hey Spearos, it's been awhile since I've visited the forum. I don't live in FL anymore, sadly.

I'm going to be down for the first week of March. Meeting up with my old dive buddies out of Gainesville. Our usual spots are off Cedar Key, but we might take the week and go down to Boca Grande. Probably mostly fish and line, but I'm hoping we'll be able to hop in the water.

Looking for any insight as to water temperatures in those areas around early March historically. Anything helps.

Stay safe out there, and thanks to anyone who replies.

Big Guns and Freediving

I have been scuba diving and spearfishing for quite a few years here in NC - mostly for grouper/snapper over 100'. Picked up an Impaler spear gun last year from Jason - a large wooden gun (60" gun with 5/16 67" shaft and 3 bands). Great for scuba diving down and killing big grouper and snapper that have been chased around wrecks...

I am planning on rigging up a float line and trying my hand at blue water hunting this spring (with-out tanks). I feel like this gun will be great for this type of hunting as well.....

This is my question - is a big bulky gun appropriate for FREE DIVING down and hunting reefs (50' to 80'), or would the gun be too much to lug around?

Does anyone know where I can buy some shaft cones? I need ones for an 8mm shaft. I've looked on every spearfishing website that I know about and I can't find them to save my life.

Thanks,
